What To Expect At A Startup

Top Fintech Companies and Startups 2021 [Part One] | Banking | Payments | Investment

If you want to work with tech startups in the finance industry, you might assume that you have to be in venture capital.

After all, technology investment banking groups work with larger, more established companies right?

That might be true in developed markets, but in some emerging markets, such as India, investment banks dedicated to tech startups have been popping up left and right.

To get the full story on this trend, I recently spoke with a reader whos working at one of the leading startup-focused investment banks in India:

Why Are Investment Banks Advising Startups?!

Q: Normally, I start with your story and background information, but I think we need to address the big question first:

Why, exactly, are startups paying for investment banks to advise them on fundraising deals?

A: The startup ecosystem in India has been booming its the #3 country for startups behind the U.S. and U.K.

So many new companies are being formed that fundraising has become difficult.

Its tough for many startups to stand out and tell their stories effectively one company often comes up with an original idea, and then dozens of others try to copy it.

Many entrepreneurs here also try to raise funding too early, i.e. right after they have the idea but nothing else and no evidence of traction.

As a result, they start reaching out to banks early on, assuming that bankers can help them in this situation .

One example is Paytms $575 million round, where GS and Citi both advised.

Q: OK, I see.

Which Is The Most Prestigious Investment Bank

Truthfully, thereâs probably not much that differentiates the banks at the top of the investment banking food chain.

Banks like JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs have sway that most others can only dream of. Differentiating between the three is really a case of which of their offices handles the most transactions.

When talking in terms like these, nobody could go wrong by working at any of the three at their New York City or London offices.

Stable And Well Capitalized

From a stability standpoint, financial stability is imperative because if a financial institution goes out of business it can be majorly disruptive. In the United States, most banks have FDIC insured deposit products. These usually dont offer much yield, but the actual deposits are theoretically protected up to a certain level. However, even if a financial firm did go out of business, getting access to the cash in the accounts could be difficult for a period of time. And so its important to pick a well capitalized institution.

Over time, asplit has developed in this group, with the Top 3 performing better than the rest.

Underwriting Services In Investment Banking

Underwriting is the process of raising capital through selling stocks or bonds to investors on behalf of corporations or other entities. Businesses need money to operate and grow their businesses, and the bankers help them get that money by marketing the company to investors.

There are generally three types of underwriting:

  • Firm Commitment The underwriter agrees to buy the entire issue and assume full financial responsibility for any unsold shares.
  • Best Efforts Underwriter commits to selling as much of the issue as possible at the agreed-upon offering price but can return any unsold shares to the issuer without financial responsibility.
  • All-or-None If the entire issue cannot be sold at the offering price, the deal is called off and the issuing company receives nothing.

Once the bank has started marketing the offering, the following book-building steps are taken to price and complete the deal.

As a result, VentureDetect creates the time and space for management teams to focus on their core competencies such as technology, product development, sales & marketing, building strategic synergies or expanding networks and investment opportunities instead of using their time primarily for dealmaking.
