What Makes A Data Center Location Attractive

How to Invest with Data Science

Commercial real estate is all about location, location, location. In the retail sector, a prime location is one near lots of people. In distribution, access to roads and rail lines is key. In the hotel sector, the best location might be near a theme park, casino, beach or ski slope. Data centers have developed their own calculus around what makes a compelling location. One is a supply of reliable and affordable power. The other is connectivity to Internet infrastructure.

Because of the high stakes involved in data centers, power redundancy is an important feature. Every data center has at least one source of backup power that kicks in if the local utility experiences an outage. Data centers rely on an uninterrupted power supply, also known as a UPS, and generators. If the power utility from the utility fails, the data center offers a seamless transition to generator backup power. Data centers offer varying levels of redundancy and the more layers of redundancy a data center offers, the more attractive it becomes to tenants. Data center tenants are typically large organizations operating in competitive sectors, and they demand zero downtime for their digital operations.

Big Data Is The Key To Bigger Investment Returns

Investment professionals fund for businesses with the expectation of potentially high rate of return. The question now is: how do they know for sure that they will get their return on the investment back? Private equity firms, for example, have a very good strategy, which helps them achieve high returns. Prior to purchasing businesses, they do their homework. Data is everywhere and investment managers make sure to use it in order to determine where to invest. Investment management companies do not make assumptions. What they do is look into several factors due to the fact that they want to have a compelling reason to pay more than another bidder.

Data science facilitates the unearthing of insight with regard to investment decisions. The greater the quantity of information is, the more important it is to understand it. Thanks to data and analytics, investors can make combinations, as well as permutations. Examination of big data represents an opportunity for efficient investing. Investment decisions are taken on the basis of rules that are formulated with precision and transparency, which translates into the fact that it is possible to make sound resolutions. Professionals should become more at ease with the thought of data and analytics. Decisions can be considerably enhanced through big data. And let us not forget about artificial intelligence.

How Ey Can Help

Q: Has the role of artificial intelligence advanced when it comes to analytical decision-making and what are the concerns that come with that?

A: Yes. AI has created a much broader channel to insights that are driving decision making. And we’re seeing real benefits within organizations. As one example, an organization that leveraged AI, specifically looking at cross-selling and upselling in their B2B channel, resulted in over an 8% increase in their B2B revenue. The advantages and ability to capitalize on insights are there, but we also have an issue with trust in AI. This is something that we’re seeing emerging globally on the regulatory landscape as well as within organizations.

We have to ask questions. Are we properly managing the data that is feeding into AI models? Are we ensuring that we are managing bias to the best of our abilities to be able to trust AI models? And furthermore, we need to have governance over the models, the data the full life cycle of the production of AI. This is something that on a region-by-region basis has the attention of regulators. We’re seeing new regulations emerge in Europe and now in the US.

Q: How can data play a role in understanding how an organization’s operations have an impact on the environment?

Minimums To Open An Account

Many financial institutions have minimum deposit requirements. In other words, they wont accept your account application unless you deposit a certain amount of money.

It pays to shop around, and not just to find out minimum deposits. Check out our broker reviews . Some firms don’t require minimum deposits. Others may reduce costs, such as trading fees and account management fees if you have a balance above a certain threshold. Still others may offer a certain number of commission-free trades for opening an account.

The Need For A Modern Data Architecture

Chart: Do You Invest in Your Professional Development?

A digital-first enterprise strategy requires a data-first approach. The existing data architecture does not support businesses high ambitions for accelerating digital innovation and agility in a post-COVID world. A well-planned data strategy for a digital organization provides business transformation opportunities, cost reduction, improved engagement, and maximum flexibility in a multi-cloud environment.

For instance, businesses can leverage enterprise data to develop advanced AI-based innovations using Natural Language Processing , machine learning , deep learning, neural networks, speech-to-text and text-to-speech capabilities. However, businesses need to know where to focus vital data curation efforts. IBM estimates that 80 percent of the effort in deploying AI is getting data ready for use per .

Over the past decade, the use of and processes for data evolved significantly both in terms of technology and use cases. Ten years ago, businesses invested heavily in large numbers of data warehouses using relational databases, which limited the use cases to traditional analytics. While many companies began migrating to data lakes for data science purposes, data warehouses remained a cornerstone.

A modern data architecture underpinned by data platform approach helps orchestrate large sets of data in a hybrid cloud environment. This approach enables o building automated workflows, business platforms, experiences and scale the value of data to accelerate AI initiatives.

Why Invest In Data

Because no business is capable of analyzing its data manually anymore. It is not only about collecting, organizing and presenting data but also about making sense of it and leveraging the analysis to reach the companys goals.

Some companies may have implemented super powerful excel macros to convert part of their data into insights. But not to the fullest. Why?

  • Because The World Economic Forum estimates that by 2025, 463 exabytes of data will be created each day globally thats over 210 million DVDs per day! That means a LOT of data!
  • Because more data is being created while number crunching
  • Because number crunching is time-consuming, so decision-makers have to wait
  • Because manual solutions cannot encompass the full spectrum of data
  • Because companies cannot resort to a truncated view of their businesses

The pandemic exposed companies weaknesses in terms of anticipation and adaptability. The ones that have digitized show better ability to navigate and act in times of crisis. Do I really need to detail this further?

How To Estimate The Cost

As a starting point: the basic calculation deducts the resource savings from the solution costs .

The costs of designing, building and implementing a more sophisticated data-driven solution have to be visualized in the long run as benefits and needs will evolve along with data maturity.

The benefits of transitioning to data-driven processes are ranging from faster reporting, more transparent decision making and information sharing, to better cost control and resource allocation. It can boost the agility of future business decision-making but it will not happen overnight.

This could be enough to start exploring investments in many basic data-driven solutions but it would be shortsighted to limit the calculation to this, as the cost of data-driven decision-making is 4-fold all offering the choice between internal and external resources:

Then the nature of savings:

  • Resources savings: FTE spend on collecting, preparing and visualizing data that now can be automated reporting preparation
  • Company savings: that real-time decision making has allowed
  • Efficiencies: in the company operations and supply-chain that data maturity offers.

Three Benefits Of Data

Stock Market For Beginners 2023 | How To Invest (Step by Step Tutorial)

1. Broad coverage

Data-driven investing involves other data processing techniques, such as web scraping, data parsing, and data normalization. These processes are often automated and require additional software beyond just purchasing raw data sets. Data analysts and researchers from other departments are able to tackle large quantities of data due to the processing power of new software and AI technology. Analysts and researchers are then able to find insights from datasets from various sources and various databases in an efficient workflow. This process also permits a more cost-efficient workflow, as overhead costs can be reduced simply by the need for fewer analysts.

2. Decision objectivity

Due to the major stakes involved in investing, absolute objectivity is difficult to come by. Data-driven investing helps remedy any conscious or subconscious biases investors and analysts may have toward a particular investment. This removes any chance for poor or irrational investment practices and decision-making. One prominent example is the success companies have reported when implementing AI or utilizing data managing processes such as web data integration.

3. Predictive analytics

Building A Data Platform: 7 Signs Its Time To Invest In Data Quality

Photo by Frankie Lopez on Unsplash

One of the most frequent questions I get from customers is: when does it make sense to invest in data quality and observability?

My answer is, it depends.

The reality is that building a data platform is a multi-stage journey and data teams have to juggle dozens of competing priorities. Data observability may not make sense for a company with a few dashboards connected to an on-premises database.

On the other hand, many organizations Ive spoken with have increased their investment in developing their data platform without seeing a corresponding increase in data adoption and trust. If your company doesnt use or trust your data, your best laid plans for data platform domination are a pipe dream.

To answer this question, Ive outlined seven leading indicators that its time to invest in data quality for your data platform.

Where Are Data Centers Located

While offices, shopping centers and warehouses are everywhere, thats not the case with data centers. Commercial real estate brokerage CBRE says there are just seven primary data center markets in the U.S. Northern Virginia leads the way with 1,504 megawatts of capacity as of mid-2021. The other six major markets are Dallas-Fort Worth , Chicago , Silicon Valley , Phoenix , Atlanta and the New York tri-state region . Secondary markets for data centers include Central Washington state, the Austin-San Antonio region and Seattle, CBRE says. As the sector grows, emerging markets are making some headway, too.

Northern Virginia has embraced the moniker Data Center Alley. Loudon County in Northern Virginia bills itself as the worlds largest concentration of data centers, with 25 million square feet built and 4 million square feet of additional space under construction as of early 2022. However, theres plenty of emerging competition from other areas that hope to attract data centers. Many states including Alabama, Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina and Ohio offer tax incentives and other subsidies in hopes of luring data center dollars.

Where Do I Find Reports About Data Center Real Estate

Is E

All of the major brokerage houses including CBRE, Cushman & Wakefield and JLL — have teams of specialists focusing on data centers, and they put out free materials as a marketing tool. CBREs page is here, Cushmans is here and you can find JLLs data center hub here. The big brokers use this free research to attract clients. One caveat is that market information about data center markets is not as clean and standardized as data for longer-established sectors, such as office, multifamily and industrial. Because the sector is new, the data isnt always transparent. Some of the leases are structured as purchases of power, so tenants lease, for instance, a megawatt of capacity. But that quirk makes it really hard to compare lease rates from one tenant to another.

Data breaches and their subsequent costs are a growing concern for businesses, big and small. According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, from 2020 to 2021, data breaches increased by 68%. IBM reports that over the past five years, the cost of a breach, having increased to an average of approximately $4 million, could impact any business as they face potential regulatory actions, fines, legal fees, and the loss of customers.

The cost of data breaches could especially take a toll on small businesses. The Shred-it® 2022 Data Protection Report found that 55% of the small business leaders surveyed indicated that they do not feel they have adequate resources or support to navigate todays data and information protection regulations that can put them at risk of both monetary and brand damage.

Small business owners should consider implementing the following data protection tactics:

Know your data. Understand the answers to these questions: What types of data do you have ? Where can it be found? Who has access to this data?

Audit your business for risks/risk assessment tools. The DPR found that over 66% of the SBLs surveyed fear that their business is vulnerable to a data breach. Once you have an understanding of what data is stored where, the next step is to evaluate the risks associated with current practices.

Learn To Diversify And Reduce Risk

Create a Stock Portfolio Tracker on Excel Using Live Data

Diversification is an important investment concept to understand. In a nutshell, by investing in a range of assets, or diversifying, you reduce the risk that one investments performance can severely hurt the return of your overall investment portfolio. You could think of it as financial jargon for not putting all of your eggs in one basket.

It can be difficult to diversify when investing in individual stocks if your budget is limited. For example, with just $1,000, you may only be able to invest in one or two companies. This results in greater risk.

This is where mutual funds and ETFs can help. Both types of funds tend to own a large number of stocks and other investments. This makes them a more diversified option than a single stock.
