Study For An Investment Banking Degree

Employers dedicate sizeable resources to training their staff in this area, but a Bachelors degree is normally expected for most investment banking graduate jobs. While this doesn’t necessarily have to be in a finance-related subject, it should have a strong maths focus – in a subject such as economics or business/management. A grade of 2:1 or above is typically required by the top investment banks.

If you’re contemplating applying for university and are already set on a career in the financial markets, there are a number of options when it comes to specialist investment banker qualifications.

Firstly, there’s the three-year full-time BSc Finance at the University of Reading, which is an affiliated Chartered Financial Analyst programme. The London Institute of Banking & Finance offers the industry-recognised BSc Finance, Investment and Risk, as well as the BSc Banking and Finance, which includes an optional one-year industry placement.

The CFA Society of the UK offers the entry-level Certificate in Investment Management award, delivering the threshold competency knowledge in research analysis, portfolio management and other key investment activities. You can either do this Level 4 qualification through self-study and by registering for the IMC exam yourself, or through a recognised training provider such as BPP or Kaplan.

Popular Subjects With Banking And Investment Recruiters

SHOCKING: Investment Banks Prefer THIS Degree during MBA Placements | CA vs CFA

It goes without saying that maths graduates are popular with banks and investment managers â though youâll still need to prove an interest in finance. Other numerate subjects are also desirable, such as physics and engineering . Business and management degrees are common in the industry. Arts and humanities graduates are valued for their broader approach towards culture and society. And languages students are increasingly sought-after, given the global nature of the business.

Technology is vitally important to finance institutions, so almost all hire graduates with computer science and related degrees into IT roles. However, a strong academic record and a degree from a top university can still get you into banking and investment even if you have not studied one of the above subjects.

Recruiting Pathways Into Investment Banking

Undergraduate and Internship Recruitment

The standard route for investment banking begins with an internship during the undergraduate years. Although its not entirely necessary to be a finance major, its important to have a strong foundation in math and knowledge of economics or business/management. This is the easiest way to break into investment banking, and its important to consider how your undergraduate coursework can help before applying to related positions. Moreover, given that recruiting starts so early, competition tends to be fierce, making it extremely challenging to secure internships and entry-level jobs in investment banking. Its essential to decide early on that you want to go into investment banking and start preparing to stand out in a highly competitive group of candidates.

Graduate Recruitment

As a graduate student, you will still apply for entry-level analyst positions, so the application process is much the same: apply for internships as early as possible before graduation or accept a position related to investment banking after graduation and move into investment banking from there.

Getting Into Investment Banking Around The World: Other Pathways And Other Regions

In some regions, not all these pathways are viable.

For example, MBA-level recruiting is virtually nonexistent in Australia, so you need to get in as an undergrad or recent grad or move to another region.

In India, recruiting is sparse outside the top 2-3 IIMs even if youre at one of the top IITs, it will be difficult to win a true front-office role.

On the other hand, some of these pathways are also more viable in certain regions.

For example, in the EMEA region, its arguably easier to graduate from a top university, complete off-cycle internships after graduation, and win a full-time IB role than it is in the U.S.

There is a culture of longer-term, off-cycle internships there, especially in countries like the U.K. and France the trick is converting them into real full-time roles.

Banks love cheap labor, so they often string along interns for long periods with no intention of hiring them full-time.

Finally, in some regions, there are other viable pathways.

For example, in South Africa and India, Chartered Accountants often complete their training, work for several years, and then move into investment banking. Some banks even have programs dedicated to recruiting these candidates.

In the U.S., corporate lawyers can move into investment banking since theres significant skill set overlap.

Im not sure it happens frequently enough to be labeled a pathway, but it is an option.

The 5 BEST Reasons To Go Into Investment Banking (Besides the Money)

For those who did not manage to get a summer internship, then another outlet are off cycle internships which are similar to regular internships but they occur during term time and offers canidates a lot more expeirence whcih are compatable to a full time analyst.

This is where you can start to see the differences between the American style and the European style of recruitment. Lets, start with the European style for once, to apply for off cycle internships you have two options.

Firstly, industrial placements or long-term internships which can be anything from 6 to 12 months and takes place after the second year and before final year of university.

This type of off cycle internship, although not as competitive as the summer programs since not everyone wants to take a whole year out to do an internship working investment banking hours for half the pay. This disincentive opportunity cost creates opportunities for those who really want it.

The second type of off cycle internships are for those who have already graduated and seeking longer term internship programs, these are usually only a 6 months program and are a cross between summer internship and industrial placements because they occur during term time and the pay is weak but the hours are like a full time analyst.

The American style of off cycle internships, although not generally advertised at all banks you would have to find them online or more likely network and ask for these roles, also falls into two category.

Route : Full Time Analyst & Associate Roles

Undergraduate students and post-graduate Masters students will be applying for full time analyst roles. Candidates applying for the associate roles are generally MBA students from a prestigious business school or an analyst with at least two years of experience from one bank applying to a different bank for whatever reason.

As already mentioned, the recruitment style will be very similar to the internships in the local country. The region from where you are applying from will dictate the opportunities and difficulty you will have when applying into investment banking.

Some notable regional difference are Australia with virtually no Associate style of recruitment only analyst, South African and India allows chartered accountants to also apply for analyst and sometimes associate roles , Germany and a few western European countries have a strong preference for finance candidates where as the UK and the US is indifferent of candidates backgrounds.

European / UK / Middle East / Asia / Africa Recruitment Style

In the European style of recruitment where candidates can only apply online, this limits the effectiveness of networking, in fact networking to get into a bulge bracket bank or elite boutique bank does not work in the UK or Europe.

Networking in Europe or the UK is only effective for smaller boutiques which does not have a formal recruitment process.

Those successful will be invited to an assessment centre.
