Thomas King Head Of Barclays Investment Bank To Retire

  • Read in app

By Chad Bray

LONDON Thomas King, the American in charge of the investment banking business at Barclays, is set to retire from the lender next month, the London-based bank said on Friday.

The departure of Mr. King, the chief executive of the Barclays investment bank, is the most prominent exit in a shake-up of management at the bank under its new chief executive, James E. Staley.

Mr. Staley joined Barclays in December after the lender ousted its former chief executive, Antony Jenkins. Mr. Staley has since brought in several executives from his former employer, JPMorgan Chase, as he looks to put his stamp on the business and turn around the lender.

Barclays has been shrinking its investment bank which has large operations in New York and grew quickly under Robert E. Diamond Jr., who preceded Mr. Jenkins as chief executive.

While sad to see him leave Barclays, I understand and respect Toms decision to retire, Mr. Staley said in a statement. Toms work in particular in leading the change in our investment bank strategy before and since May of 2014 has been very important to ensuring Barclays future success. Toms trademark has always been his focus on the needs of clients and colleagues, and we are grateful to him for his stewardship.

Barclays has previously announced it will bring two JPMorgan veterans in to join its management team this year.

Despite his departure, the bank has continued many of the cost-cutting initiatives announced by Mr. Jenkins.

Reenergising Careers Through Encore

27 Sep 2019

Encore!, Barclays flagship returnship programme, helps experienced professionals re-enter the workforce after a career break, as well as provides leadership and development training, mentorship, networking and a pathway to joining Barclays as a full-time employee.

After spending about 5 years as an associate at a real estate private equity firm in Miami, FL, Leilani Soto took a career break to relocate to the UK in order to start a life with her husband stationed in the military outside of London. While Leilani was initially nervous about taking a break so soon in her career, she decided to take a calculated risk to make the move to a new city to be with her partner.

But after a year of transitioning in the UK, Leilani was eager to return to work. She came across a newsletter geared towards women returners and was pleased to learn about Barclays Encore! programme. Leilani was excited for an opportunity to rejoin Barclays, where she had previously interned as a summer analyst in debt capital markets at the firm in her early twenties.

Encore! fellow Leilani Soto joined Barclays in 2019 as an Assistant Vice President in Real Estate Banking.

She quickly excelled in the Encore! programme and received support and encouragement from senior leaders across the Investment Bank. The 2019 Encore! class participated in roundtable sessions on financial markets, networking events and workshops that provided the foundation for a support system.

What Esg Can Mean For Performance

The details of how an ESG policy is implemented in a portfolio may have a direct impact on its performance.

There is a key distinction between an ESG approach based on negative screening by industry and one based on relative comparisons of the firms in each industry.

For example, an investor using a negative screen may choose to exclude coal mining companies from their investment universe. Another investor may use ESG ratings to rank coal mining companies, and choose to invest in the ones that have the best overall ranking within the sector. In the first case, in a year in which coal mining companies outperform the market, the investment portfolio may lag a broad market index.

In the second approach, the portfolio is neutral with regard to the systematic sector exposure, but favours those companies with better ESG policies i.e., those that do less harm to the environment, treat their workers better, and are better managed.

In our study, we constructed diversified portfolios designed to track the US Investment Grade Corporate Bond Index and imposed either a positive or negative tilt to different ESG factors. We found that:

High-ESG bond portfolios perform better than low-ESG ones

The Relationship Between Esg Scores And Credit Ratings

We also wanted to establish whether there is a relationship between credit rating, which measures the financial strength of a company, and ESG factors.

In grouping the bonds in the Bloomberg Barclays US Corporate investment-grade index into buckets of low, medium and high ESG scores, we found that:

  • The average spread of high ESG bonds was 38bp lower than that of the low ESG portfolio for MSCI data and 35bp lower in the case of Sustainalytics.
  • In both cases, investing in top-tier ESG bonds comes with roughly a one-notch uptick in credit quality.

From these results, it is clear that investors should be careful when integrating ESG data in portfolio construction to avoid unintentional biases in allocation and risk profile. Just overweighting better ESG companies can easily result in lower yields and consequently lower returns.

Looking at whether ESG scores relate to future changes in credit ratings, we found that bonds with high Governance scores experienced fewer downgrades than those with low G scores.

Looking at E, S and G factors individually, the credit rating differential between top and bottom tiers was more pronounced for the Environment pillar and almost absent in Governance. This could mean that issuers with higher credit quality are better able to comply with environmental constraints than those with lower credit quality.

Higher ESG can mean better credit ratings

Qatari Capital Raising Regulatory Investigations

Barclays’ June and November 2008 capital raisings are the subject of investigations. The UK’s Serious Fraud Office commenced its investigation in August 2012. In October 2012, the United States Department of Justice and the US Securities and Exchange Commission informed Barclays they had commenced an investigation into whether the group’s relationships with third parties who assist Barclays to win or retain business are compliant with the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.The Financial Services Authority announced an expansion of the investigation into the Barclays-Qatar deal in January 2013, focusing on the disclosure surrounding the ownership of the securities in the bank.

Barclays had sought to raise capital privately, avoiding direct equity investment from the Government of the United Kingdom and, therefore, a bailout. The result was Abu Dhabi’s £3.5 billion investment in the bank, a deal in which Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan made a profit of £3.5 billion.Much of the focus to date has been on the injections by Qatar in June and November 2008, notably the so far unproven allegation that Barclays lent Qatar the money to invest in the bank. Other questions include what happened to the £110 million in fees paid by Barclays ostensibly to Sheikh Mansour, and the £66 million provided by Barclays to the Qataris for unexplained “advisory fees”.

Barclay banks has unfair and unreasonable practices. They allowed a merchant to charge me for merchandise that I didnt order or receive. They then want me to prove that I didnt cancel,I asked cancel what. I was then sent documents that were so small, that I was unable to read with a magnifying glass. These documents were/are supposed to be proof from the merchant. Once this is straightened out,I will not use this charge card or encourage others to use it! Any other bank would note this as fraud but not Barclays Bank. I agree with the other unhappy customer who stated that these people treat us unfairly. We need to let them know that they are not the only bank we can use and stop patronizing their business.

  • Barclays consolidating campus sites globally

LONDON, June 30 Barclays said on Wednesday it will move its investment bank staff in London into its nearby headquarters, consolidating office space in the Canary Wharf financial district.

The British bank said it would vacate 5 North Colonnade, where the investment bank is based, by the end of 2022 and plans to renovate its towering 32-story One Churchill Place building.

Barclays said the move was part of a long-term review of its property footprint, as banks worldwide cut back on real estate amid a shift to more home working during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bank has in recent years been shifting from scattered locations across countries in which it operates into a campus model of consolidating offices in one place.

In 2018 Barclays opened such an office complex in Whippany, New Jersey, bringing together operations and technology staff from across the Americas.

It also has campuses in Glasgow, Scotland and Pune in India.

Accusations Of Money Laundering

In March 2009, Barclays was accused of violating international anti-money laundering laws. According to the NGO Global Witness, the Paris branch of Barclays held the account of Equatorial Guinean President Teodoro Obiang‘s son, Teodorin Obiang, even after evidence that Obiang had siphoned oil revenues from government funds emerged in 2004. According to Global Witness, Obiang purchased a Ferrari and maintains a mansion in Malibu with the funds from this account.

A 2010 report by the Wall Street Journal described how , Barclays, Lloyds Banking Group, and other banks were involved in helping the Alavi Foundation, Bank Melli, the Iranian government, and/or others circumvent US laws banning financial transactions with certain states. They did this by ‘stripping’ information out of wire transfers, thereby concealing the source of funds. Barclays settled with the government for US$298 million.

In February 2012 Barclays was forced to pay £500 million in tax which it had tried to avoid. Barclays was accused by HMRC of designing two schemes that were intended to avoid substantial amounts of tax. Tax rules forced the bank to tell the UK authorities about its plans.David Gauke, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, said that “We do not take today’s action lightly, but the potential tax loss from this scheme and the history of previous abuse in this area mean that this is a circumstance where the decision to change the law with full retrospective effect is justified.”
