Investment Banking after CA – Top Course after Chartered Accountancy

NFP Retirement bases its investment strategy for each client based on the specifics of their situation. This could involve your income and liquidity needs, risk tolerance, time horizon, long-term goals and more.

For the most part, NFP tends to invest client assets in some combination of mutual funds and exchange-traded funds . It, however, isn’t opposed to investing in individual securities as well.

Savings Rates At The Largest Banks In California

Top 15 Best Banks in California

Here are the savings rates you’ll earn with the biggest banks in California. Two of these, Chase and Citi, made our list.

We didn’t choose others because they didn’t have branches in as many parts of California as some of our top picks, or they lacked distinguishing features, such as high APYs or sign-up bonuses.

However, you may still decide one of these California banks is a good fit for you, and you might like banking with a widespread institution you’re familiar with.

As of September 2022, the national average APY on savings accounts is 0.13% APY according to the FDIC.

How Are The Top Investment Banks Different

Size is the most obvious difference, but thats not the best way to think about these categories: Many tiny firms end up working on mega-deals these days.

Instead, you can use these four criteria:

  • Deal Size: Does the bank work on deals worth less than $100 million USD? Or mostly deals below or above $1 billion?
  • Geography: Do they have a presence only in one city or region? Are they global? Are they strong in Europe but not North America or Asia?
  • Services Provided: Do they only advise on M& A deals, or do they also work on debt and equity deals? Do they also do Restructuring? Or does the bank focus on private placements?
  • Exit Opportunities: Where do bankers at this firm move to afterward? Are mega-fund PE exits common, or are middle-market funds, other banks, or normal companies more common?

There are some other differences as well for example, you often earn more at elite boutiques than at bulge bracket banks. But its easiest to start with the four criteria above.

What Do Investment Banks Do

SHOCKING: Investment Banks Prefer THIS Degree during MBA Placements | CA vs CFA

Broadly speaking, investment banks assist in large, complicated financial transactions. They may provide advice on how much a company is worth and how best to structure a deal if the investment bankers client is considering an acquisition, merger, or sale. Essentially, their services include underwriting new debt and equity securities for all types of corporations, providing aid in the sale of securities, and helping to facilitate mergers and acquisitions, reorganizations, and broker trades for both institutions and private investors. They also may issue securities as a means of raising money for the client groups and create the necessary SEC documentation for a company to go public.

How Should You Think About Investment Banking In New York Vs Chicago Vs Los Angeles Vs Others

Its tricky to answer this question because some differences are easier to quantify than others .

But if I had to make a list, the main differences would consist of:

  • Industry Focus Generalist? Tech / healthcare? Industrials?
  • Relative Strength of Different Banks and Groups Even if a bank is technically middle market, it might advise on larger deals if its particularly strong in one city.
  • Recruiting Interview questions are the same or very similar, but the types of candidates and the randomness differ.
  • Cost of Living and Quality of Life Sure, youll be working crazy hours, but what happens if you miraculously get some free time?
  • Culture This one is nebulous, but lets say that personality types differ in different regions.
  • Networking / Exit Opportunities Which places give you the most depth and breadth?
  • The hours and compensation may differ slightly, but for junior-level roles, these differences are small and have more to do with your bank and group than your location.

You should not pick one city over another because you believe you will work 5 hours less per week or earn 5% more.

Best For Students: East West Bank

    Best For

    • No interest for checking account

New college students can get off on the right foot financially by working with East West Bank. With just a $100 minimum deposit, you can open a Student Plus Savings account that earns interest at 0.01%. There is a $3 monthly fee, but East West Bank will waive the fee if you have at least one direct deposit sent into the account each month.

The Student Plus Checking account also has features that help make it easier to handle your money. For example, it has no monthly maintenance fee. When you open an account you will also get a Visa® debit card. As long as you use that debit card for ATM withdrawals, East West Bank will reimburse you each month for all out-of-network ATM fees. The downside with the Student Plus Checking account is that it doesnt earn interest. That means it may be a good idea to couple it with the savings account to better meet your banking needs.

    Outside Of Investment Banking

While NY is the center for investment banking, private equity, and hedge fund roles in the U.S., other jobs are distributed more evenly.

For example, if you work in corporate finance or do a rotational program at a large company, youll end up working all over, from large cities to small towns in the middle of nowhere.

Industries like asset management, private wealth management, and corporate/commercial banking are also more spread out, and plenty of firms operate in smaller cities.

Finally, venture capital has traditionally been concentrated in California, but that is changing, with a decent percentage of activity in NY and Boston now .

So Whats The Best City For Investment Banking

If you dont know what you want to do long-term, you have no strong industry preference, and youre aiming for the summer internship to full-time offer route, NY is the best bet.

This is even more true at the MBA level due to the relative lack of internships elsewhere.

Other cities can be fine if youre going there to pursue a specific exit opportunity, youre focused on one industry, or you have strong personal reasons for being in the area.

I hesitate to give a ranking because it depends on your options: if you get a GS offer in SF and a boutique or middle-market offer in NY, take the GS offer in SF any day of the week.

But if you have similar offers in multiple cities, I would probably rank Chicago as the next-best place, followed by LA.

I would put SF and Houston below these because of the specialization/pigeonholing issues and the cost and/or quality-of-life problems.

The other cities mentioned at the end can also be fine, but I wouldnt recommend them over any of the five major centers for entry-level IB jobs.

And whatever you choose, remember that big cities in the U.S. are not great places to live in for the long-term due to the cost of living, crime, and generally deteriorating conditions.

You want to gain experience, earn money, establish yourself, and then interview for other roles that let you live and work in cheaper areas with better governance.

Pick your poison correctly, and it shouldnt be too painful to get there.

Gerber Kawasaki Wealth & Investment Management Investing Strategy

According to Gerber Kawasaki Wealth & Investment Management’s SEC-filed Form ADV, its ” investment advice is tailored to meet our clients’ needs and investment objectives.” To make sure this relationship is as clear as possible, your advisor will personally discuss with you the circumstances currently surrounding your finances.

Then, once your investment plan is in place, your advisor will continue to monitor your situation and account for any changes in your situation or goals. This process is called rebalancing, and it’ll be done on an as-needed basis.

What Should Someone Look For In An Online Bank

    Tania Brown, CFP:

“With an online bank, absolutely online customer service, because you do not have the advantage of walking inside and talking to a human being. How often are you able to get them? What are their hours?”

    Roger Ma, CFP:

“How onerous the transfer process is, transferring money in and transferring money out. Is it same day, next day? Is it pretty easy to sync a brick-and-mortar checking account to this particular high-yield savings account?”

    Mykail James, CFEI:

“When it comes to online banks, you want to be a little bit more strict about what type of interest rates they’re providing. That’s the biggest thing, because online banks are supposed to have the higher interest rate because they don’t have the overhead of the brick-and-mortar. You want to make sure that it’s well above the national average. What type of securities do they provide? Do they have two-factor identification? If it’s an online bank, they should definitely have at the bare minimum two-factor authentication in how easy it is to change your passwords and things like that, because you want to be a little more hypersensitive about the cyber security for a strictly online bank.”

Investment Banking In New York Vs Chicago Vs San Francisco Vs Los Angeles: How To Pick Your Poison

I published an article on this topic of investment banking in New York vs. Chicago vs. San Francisco vs. Los Angeles vs. Houston vs. other cities a long time ago but a fair amount has changed since then:

    • Remote / hybrid work means that some of the advantages and disadvantages of different cities are more nebulous.
    • Certain industries have risen and fallen out of favor over time, and banks reputations and strengths in different regions have also changed.
    • Major cities in the U.S., just like elite universities and the government, are in a period of institutional decline. I enjoy watching the flames from a safe distance.
    • Some new financial centers are growing in certain regions, such as the Southeast.

Ill focus on the five most significant cities for IB roles here, but Ill touch on several others at the end:

What Should Someone Look For In A Brick

    Tania Brown, CFP:

“How can that bank grow with you? If you are 25, single or newly married, and all you need is a checking account, that’s going to look very different 15 years from now when you may have had a couple of jobs, you may have an IRA roll over, or you may want a financial adviser.”

    Mykail James, CFEI:

“How accessible it is. So where are the branches? And if I am to go out of town or something, how accessible is my money to me?”

Smaller firms, who focus on niche market sectors, have also asserted themselves as key players in healthcare investment banking. One that has for many years been near the top is global investment bank Jefferies.

Two other healthcare players are the investment banks Guggenheim Partners and Greenhill & Co. . Both of these firms have a strong history and a growing presence in healthcare. In fact, Greenhill & Co. has, in the past, broken into the top ten in league rankings and is regularly competing with the large global investment banks for a greater share of the healthcare wallet.

How Certain Are You That You Want To Stay In The Finance Industry For The Long Term

    • Not That Certain Take the BB offer because it will give you more options outside of finance the brand-name recognition is much stronger.
    • Very Certain Its more of a toss-up, so you have to be more specific:
    • You Want to Stay in IB for the Long Term Its almost always better to take the EB offer because youll earn higher compensation and get more interesting work.
    • You Want to Move into Private Equity or Hedge Funds ASAP It depends on your specific group. An M& A offer at an EB easily beats an ECM offer at a BB, but if youre deciding between two strong industry groups, make a decision based on the people.

After running this site for over a decade, my opinion is that most people dont know what they want to do.

Especially in the last few years, Ive seen a lot of students plan to go to mega-funds, but then get burned out after six months in IB and quit to join tech companies instead.

The Bottom Line: Even though elite boutiques do offer many advantages over bulge brackets, youre still better off going to a BB unless youre very, very certain of your long-term plans.

For example, if youve done four off-cycle and summer internships at banks of different sizes and concluded that IB is your passion, sure, accept the EB offer.

But if youve only done one 3-month summer internship, and you have EB and BB offers, you take less of a chance by going to the bulge bracket.
