He doesnt require an asset minimum to become a client, but his fee structure works best for investors with at least $1 million. He charges between 0.5% and 1% of assets annually, depending on account size. In addition to the usual investing advice, Lehman offers estate and tax planning.

Edelman Financial Services, based in Fairfax, Va., has more than 17,000 clients, $8.5 billion in assets under management and offices in 14 states. Some planners at Edelman will accept accounts of as little as $75,000, but the fees will be 2% of assets per year, compared with 0.75% annually for an account of $1 million to $3 million. Other big firms offer advice in small increments: Garrett Planning Network, a nationwide group of independent planners, can put you in touch with one of its more than 300 fee-only advisers, who charge hourly rates of $150 to $240 and can help on an as-needed or ongoing basis. Their target audience is beginners, middle-income earners and do-it-yourselfers. It typically takes eight to 12 hours to devise a comprehensive financial and investment plan.

The Move Is One More Step In Merrill’s ‘project Thunder’ Campaign Which Aims To Address Advisor Dissatisfaction

More market volatility ahead?

Merrill Lynch plans to lower the minimum investment required for some alternative strategies in a bid to lure affluent clients to the products and alleviate advisor frustrations.

According to an internal memo seen by Citywire, investment minimums for certain investments will decrease from $25,000 to $10,000. The change affects eligible accredited investors who are clients of Merrills investment advisory program, according to Insider, which first reported the changes.

Under Securities and Exchange Commission rules, to qualify as an accredited investor an individual must have an annual income of $200,000 or a net worth of $1m.

The alternative investments included in the change include real estate, private equity, and private credit strategies.

The move is part of an initiative, dubbed Project Thunder and first reported by AdvisorHub, which was launched in August to address advisors frustrations, which include a demand for more alternative products.

Also as part of Project Thunder, in September, Merrill announced it was in its alternative due diligence team by 50%, as well as adding new alts products.

The Merrill brand has a vast network of thousands of advisors. Thus, clients starting a search for a local advisor may find one of the teams 27,000-plus advisors in their area.

As for the firms specific offerings, clients will find a broad menu of program offerings that allow clients flexibility in how they want to interact with their advisor. For example, clients can choose to hand over control of their account to their advisor, or they can opt to retain the day-to-day decision making. They can stick with a limited number of strategies managed by Merrill professionals, or branch out into other individual stocks and bonds, third-party portfolio managers and even alternative investments.

Potential clients should make a point to discuss fees with their advisor, since they are often negotiable and can vary for similar services from advisor to advisor. Also, clients should be sure to ask how the advisor earns money for the products they recommend, since they may earn compensation for selling certain investments and thus have a potential conflict of interest. Additionally, not every advisor offers each service or investment, making it important for potential clients to find out upfront what an advisor does and does not offer.

Before you make your decision, be sure to research multiple firms to ensure you find the right advisor for you.
