  • Increase your career opportunities and enhance your earning potential.

What Does An Alternative Investment Analyst Do

Alternative investment analysts are often responsible for performing all the tasks a typical financial analyst does, including:

  • Recommending individual investments and financial portfolios
  • Evaluating financial data and investment opportunities
  • Studying economic and business trends
  • Examining financial statements to determine value
  • Meeting with clients to gain better insight into future prospects
  • Assessing management team strengths
  • Preparing verbal and written financial reports

Alternative investment analysts must also manage, analyze, distribute, and/or regulate real assets for individuals and/or companies. This means they regularly work with the financial aspects of real estate, infrastructure, natural resources, commodities, and intangible assets. Additionally, these professionals oversee hedge funds, private equity, and structured products such as collateralized debt obligations and credit derivatives.

Chartered or not, alternative investment analysts primarily work in offices but may be required to travel when in-person meetings with clients are necessary. Most are employed by larger financial institutions located in major financial centers and work at least 40 hours a week with additional research often conducted at home.

Differences Between The Caia And The Cfa

Ethical and Professional Standards

Similar to earning the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, possessing the CAIA designation provides individuals with access to jobs, member chapters and sources of education. Because the scope of alternative investments is dramatically different from that of conventional investments, such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and exchange-traded funds, the CAIA designation was created to distinguish those individuals who are best qualified in dealing with this class of investments. The CFA includes content on alternative investments, but the CAIA dives much deeper into the topic and the valuation methods specific to each.

Of the two, the CFA is seen as the more difficult designation to get, as the exams cover more content and have historically had lower pass rates than the CAIA exams. Overall, the CFA is seen as an excellent general designation for the financial industry, but the CAIA can be a difference-maker in niche areas of finance like private equity or hedge funds.

What Are Alternative Investments

Alternatives, as investors call them, are asset classes beyond the equity and debt structures that make up traditional investments. They can include real estate gold, silver or other commodities infrastructure projects private commercial enterprises and almost any other valuable asset that investors dont ordinarily seek out. They can also include investing in traditional assets in non-traditional ways, such as short-selling stocks.

Alternative investments can sometimes take traditional forms. Many are managed through mutual funds, index funds or similar structures. For example, a single fund could collect precious metals in order to give investors access to that market without exposure to a commodities exchange. This field has grown significantly in recent years. According to a report from McKinsey, institutional investors and retail investors alike make alternatives about 25% of their portfolios.
