Alternative investing platform iCapital Network announced it has entered into a definitive agreement with Bank of America to acquire the banks alternative investment feeder fund operations. iCapital expects the volume on its platform to more than quadruple as a result, growing from $6 billion in invested capital across 14,000 underlying accounts to $25 billion across nearly 70,000 accounts.

Bank of Americas Merrill Lynch and U.S. Trust account holders and advisors will continue to use their existing interfaces and their client relationships, but the inner workings of the system will be improved, said Lawrence Calcano, CEO of iCapital.

Bank of Americas Investment Solutions Group will continue to source, distribute and monitor alternative investment feeder funds on its platform, according to iCapital, and its guidance on the role of alternative investments wont change. The funds will continue to be distributed through Merrill Lynch and U.S. Trust channels. iCapitals back-end automation will improve how books are processed, for example, and reporting functions should be better integrated with the user-facing portal, said Calcano.

The acquisition is a reflection of the firms approach to technology. iCapital doesnt want to disrupt theyd rather enable, said Calcano. What were not doing is competing with the advisors for their clients, adding were trying to make their provision of these assets to their clients easier.

What We Do

Tackling the nuanced world of unconventional investmentsAlternative investments refer to funds or asset classes such as hedge funds, private equity funds, venture capital funds, managed futures, derivatives, real estate and commodities. While many people hear these terms on TV and radio news programs, few really know what they mean, how they function and what role they play in personal finance.

We believe it is important to educate students of all business disciplines about these nontraditional investments and their relevance to our economy. We also believe it is important to provide faculty with the means necessary to keep curricula current. To this end, the Alternative Investments Institute hosts a guest lecture series, conducts surveys among institutional investors by partnering with Wall Street firms and publishes white papers on the issues that affect the players in this field. These resources delve into the natures of these complex, high-worth, high-yield investment types.

Guest Lecture SeriesOur Guest Lecture Series brings seasoned leaders from various industries to campus to share their experiences, perspectives and predictions for where the market is heading. Distinguished speakers have come from the banking, manufacturing, and innovation and technology industries. Lecture topics have ranged from managing money during the financial crisis to trading in agricultural commodities such as sugar, coffee and soybeans.
