How to invest in stocks for beginners 2022 – Basics of stock market for beginners

Learning how to invest in stocks can be daunting for beginners, but its really just a matter of figuring out which investment approach you want to use, what kind of account makes sense for you, and how much money you should put into stocks.

If you’re tempted to open a brokerage account but need more advice on choosing the right one, see our latest roundup of the best brokers for stock investors. Yes, if you approach it responsibly. As it turns out, investing isnt as hard or complex as it might seem.

Thats because there are plenty of tools available to help you. One of the best is stock mutual funds, which are an easy and low-cost way for beginners to invest in the stock market. These funds are available within your 401, IRA or any taxable brokerage account.

An S& P 500 fund, which effectively buys you small pieces of ownership in about 500 of the largest U.S. companies, is a good place to start.

The other option, as referenced above, is a robo-advisor, which will build and manage a portfolio for you for a small fee.

Even in these instances, your funds are typically still safe, but losing temporary access to your money is still a legitimate concern.

Decide If You Want To Invest Intraday Or Invest For The Long

Also, while formulating our investing strategy we should also determine if we want to trade Intraday, invest for the long-term or want to earn in swing trading.

If we want to trade intraday then we need to create a trading strategy that involves squaring off our position on the same day.

If we want to invest in stocks for the long term then we need to create a long-term investment strategy that involves holding the stocks for more than one year.

It Could Be Looming Should You Keep Investing Or Wait

As inflation continues to soar, many Americans are concerned that a recession could be coming. The Fed has hiked interest rates three times so far in 2022 in an effort to curb inflation. But increased interest rates can also slow consumer spending, which could potentially lead to a recession.

To be clear, nobody can say for certain whether it will happen or not. But if it does, should you still be investing in the stock market right now? Here’s what you need to know.

Dow Jones Futures: Stocks Near Bear Market Lows On Columbus Day

  • 08:23 AM ET 10/10/2022

Dow Jones futures were little changed Monday morning, along with S& P 500 futures and Nasdaq futures. The stock market is open on Monday, but bond trading is closed for Columbus Day.

A stock market rally attempt got underway last week, with big early gains for the Dow Jones and other major indexes. But as hopes for a Fed pivot faded again, Treasury yields rebounded and stocks tumbled. Along with warnings from Advanced Micro Devices and CVS Health , the major indexes wiped out most of their gains by Friday’s close.

While the market rally attempt isn’t over, the Dow Jones, S& P 500 and Nasdaq are back near bear market lows. Investors should be extremely cautious.

Vertex stock, Neurocrine Biosciences and Eli Lilly are trading right around buy points. NBIX stock and Vertex Pharmaceuticals are on IBD Leaderboard.

Tesla , Enphase Energy and On Semiconductor , three stocks that had been close to buy points, suffered big sell-offs. TSLA stock sold off Monday on disappointing deliveries, then kept sliding. Enphase stock briefly flashed an aggressive buy signal Tuesday, then abruptly plunged Wednesday. ON stock closed above a trendline entry Thursday, but dived Friday amid AMD’s chip sell-off.

Megacaps aren’t helping. Microsoft stock, Google parent Alphabet and Amazon.com , all just below their 21-day lines Thursday, fell sharply on Friday, back toward bear market or short-term lows. Apple , which never reached its falling 21-day, skidded toward short-term lows.

Choose Your Stock Order Type

Chart: Stock Market is America

Dont be put off by all those numbers and nonsensical word combinations on your brokers online order page. Refer to this cheat sheet of basic stock-trading terms:

Term

A request to buy or sell a stock only at a specific price or better.

Stop order

Once a stock reaches a certain price, the stop price or stop level, a market order is executed and the entire order is filled at the prevailing price.

Stop-limit order

When the stop price is reached, the trade turns into a limit order and is filled up to the point where specified price limits can be met.

There are a lot more fancy trading moves and complex order types. Dont bother right now or maybe ever. Investors have built successful careers buying stocks solely with two order types: market orders and limit orders.

With a market order, youre indicating that youll buy or sell the stock at the best available current market price. Because a market order puts no price parameters on the trade, your order will be executed immediately and fully filled, unless youre trying to buy a million shares and attempt a takeover coup. The market order could also not be fulfilled if you were attempting to purchase a very thinly traded stock with little volume.

Watch Out For Earnings Season

The good news for growth-minded investors, like Hodge, is the wealth of information to scour in the months ahead. Thats because earnings season, when publicly traded companies report quarterly results, kicks off mid-month.

October should be pretty insightful from an earnings perspective, Hodge says.

Quarterly earnings reports that companies release in the weeks ahead will be crucial. The focus for investors will be less on past results and more on what companies have to say about their outlook for the rest of the year and the year ahead, says Michael Sheldon, executive director and chief investment officer of RDM Financial Group.

One risk for the markets is that given a slowdown in the economy, the 2023 outlook for corporate profits looks too high and will have to come down, Sheldon says.

That idea of readjusting expectations should be a key theme, as some pockets of financial markets are indicating a consensus of a pretty resilient economy next year. But Hodge says that may be too optimistic.

Hodge is paying closer attention to leading growth indicators, especially two reports due in the first week of October from the Institute for Supply Management . The institutes manufacturing PMI and services PMI reports will provide valuable insight.

Even with the S& P 500 in a bear market, Hodges concern is that a material slowdown in the pace of economic growth has not yet been fully priced into stocks, and there will be more volatility as that happens.

Manage Your Investment Portfolio

Depending on your objective, you may want to set specific times to revisit your portfolio, to help ensure youre still in line with your goals. Depending on how involved you want to be, this can be done daily, weekly, monthly or even longer.

To make this step easier on you, some online trading platforms like WebBroker can empower you with real-time market data to help you uncover, evaluate and act on your investment ideas as well as provide tools to help you keep track of them along the way.

Invest 5 To 10% In Your Retirement Account First

A common mistake many new investors make is that they start trading stocks before maxing out their 401. This misstep is leaving money on the table.

And I mean that quite literally.

The chief benefit of a workplace-sponsored 401 is that most employers will match up to 3% of your annual contributions to it some even higher. That means that if you make $50,000 a year and contribute 3% or $1,500 to your 401, your employer will also toss in $1,500 for a total of $3,000.

Thats the equivalent to an instant 3% raise, so be sure youre maxing that out at minimum.

Then, if you can afford it, its best to invest 10% of your pre-tax income into your retirement account even if youre self-employed and have an IRA.

Best Day Of The Week To Buy Stocks

How To Invest In Stocks For Beginners In 2022

There are some who believe that certain days offer systematically better returns than others, but over the long run, there is very little evidence for such a market-wide effect.

Still, people believe that the first day of the workweek is best. Its called the Monday effect or the weekend effect. Anecdotally, traders say the stock market has had a tendency to drop on Mondays. Some people think this is because a significant amount of bad news is often released over the weekend. Others point to investors gloomy mood at having to go back to work, which is especially evident during the early hours of Monday trading.

For whatever reason, the Monday effect has largely disappeared. The chart below shows that while Mondays on average have marked negative returns for the S& P 500 in 2018, the effect is very small.

Nevertheless, if youre planning on buying stocks, perhaps youre better off doing it on a Monday than on any other day of the week, and potentially snapping up some bargains in the process.

Define Your Goals And Strategies

People buy stocks based on different objectives, so you should understand your motivation for this type of investment. You can start by asking yourself the following questions:

  • What are your investment goals?

  • Are stocks a long-term investment?

  • Or do you want to try to make quick money in the short-term out of the stock market fluctuations?

  • How much risk are you willing to take?

  • Answering these questions will help you determine how you want to approach this important investment journey.

Another important consideration is your budget. Are you planning on putting a bit of money in each month? Each week? Or do you have a lump sum that you want to invest at the start and work with that?

This also begs another question around whether you want to control the investments yourself , or if youd rather hand the reigns over to a financial advisor.

If youre planning on going down the self-directed route, the information provided here may be helpful.

Wealthy Millennials See Cryptocurrency As The Best Investment

Looking forward, the wealthy millennial investors ranked cryptocurrency or digital assets, real estate, private equity, and direct investment into companies offer the “greatest opportunities for growth.” Older investors favored US stocks, followed by real estate and equities in the emerging and international markets.

Regardless of who they side with, Americans with less than $3 million in assets will likely find it difficult to add private equity and direct company investments to their portfolios. Stocks and cryptocurrency, however, are only a click of a button away.

Real estate, the one investment both groups of investors were high on going forward, has historically been a ticket to wealth for many Americans. It’s an “excellent inflation hedge,” comes with a tax break, insulates buyers from changes in rent and housing prices, and diversifies one’s investments, Boston University economist Laurence Kotlikoff previously told Insider.

But the rising cost of home ownership has at least temporarily put this out of reach for many individuals. A June Opendoor survey of over 1,000 millennials found that only 12% thought they could afford a house, and nearly half weren’t sure they would ever buy one.

While the housing market may be cooling with prices falling in certain regions high mortgage rates are keeping homes unaffordable for many prospective buyers.

How Do Commissions And Fees Work

Most brokers charge customers a commission for every trade. These fees can go up to about $10 per trade. Due to commission costs, investors generally find it prudent to limit the total number of trades that they make to avoid spending extra money on fees. Certain other types of investments, such as exchange-traded funds, carry fees in order to cover the costs of fund management.

    Optimize Your Stock Portfolio

    Live stock market

We hope your first stock purchase marks the beginning of a lifelong journey of successful investing. But if things turn difficult, remember that every investor even Warren Buffett goes through rough patches. The key to coming out ahead in the long term is to keep your perspective and concentrate on the things that you can control. Market gyrations arent among them. But there are a few things in your control.

Once you’re familiar with the stock purchasing process, take the time to dig into other areas of the investment world. How will mutual funds play a part in your investment story? In addition to a brokerage account, have you set up a retirement account, such as an IRA? Opening a brokerage account and buying stocks is a great first step, but it’s really just the beginning of your investment journey.

    Best Month To Buy Stocks

The markets tend to have strong returns around the turn of the year, as well as during the summer months. The chart below shows the monthly average returns for the S& P 500 over the period from 1950 through 2017:

So, in terms of seasonality, the end of December has shown to be a good time to buy small caps or value stocks, to be poised for the rise early in the next month. Analyze Your Risk Appetite

While formulating your investing strategy you should also determine your risk appetite. Risk appetite refers to the amount of risk that you as an investor is willing to take based on your financial goals and objectives.

The investors can be divided into:

    • Conservative investor: This type of investors risk appetite is low and they focus on investing in stable and low-risk investment options.
    • Moderate investor: This type of investors risk appetite is neutral.

    Tesla Stock Split Timeline

How To Invest In Stocks For Beginners (2022)

Whats the exact timing of the Tesla stock split? The Tesla stock split was rumored for many months in advance. On August 4, 2022, Teslas shareholders approved the 3-for-1 stock split during the companys annual meeting. However, the idea of the stock split was floated initially in a tweet earlier in the year on March 28. Once the buzz started to build, there eventually had to be a shareholder vote to make the stock split official.

In a proxy filing from earlier this year, Tesla claimed that the reason for the stock split was to offer every employee the option of receiving equity and to reset the market price. By resetting the market price, more employees and investors would have the opportunity to invest in Tesla once again.

The release from Tesla specifically stated:

Since our stock split in August 2020 to June 6, 2022, our stock price has risen 43.5%. While this value appreciation has led to our employees benefiting enormously through the years, we want to make sure all employees, no matter when they join, have access to the same advantages.

The release also communicated that Tesla wanted to offer its employees more flexibility in managing their equity, which they felt may help maximize shareholder value on top of making the common stock more accessible to retail shareholders.

The Different Ways To Invest In The Stock Market

    Individual stocks

You can invest in individual stocks if — and only if — you have the time and desire to thoroughly research and evaluate stocks on an ongoing basis. If this is the case, we 100% encourage you to do so. It is entirely possible for a smart and patient investor to beat the market over time. On the other hand, if things like quarterly earnings reports and moderate mathematical calculations don’t sound appealing, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with taking a more passive approach.

    Index funds

In addition to buying individual stocks, you can choose to invest in index funds, which track a stock index like the S& P 500. When it comes to actively vs. passively managed funds, we generally prefer the latter . Index funds typically have significantly lower costs and are virtually guaranteed to match the long-term performance of their underlying indexes. Over time, the S& P 500 has produced total returns of about 10% annualized, and performance like this can build substantial wealth over time.

    Robo-advisors

Finally, another option that has exploded in popularity in recent years is the robo-advisor. A robo-advisor is a brokerage that essentially invests your money on your behalf in a portfolio of index funds that is appropriate for your age, risk tolerance, and investing goals. Not only can a robo-advisor select your investments, but many will optimize your tax efficiency and make changes over time automatically.
