Bosch Systematically Expands Capacity For Semiconductor Manufacturing

Bosch has made several investments in its semiconductor business over the past few years. The best example of this is the wafer fab in Dresden, which opened in June 2021. At 1 billion euros, it is the single biggest investment in the companys history. The semiconductor center in Reutlingen is also being systematically expanded: between now and 2025, Bosch is to invest around 400 million euros in the expansion of manufacturing capacity and the conversion of existing factory space into new clean-room space. This includes construction of a new extension in Reutlingen, which will create an additional 3,600 square meters of ultramodern clean-room space. All in all, clean-room space in Reutlingen is set to grow from around 35,000 square meters at present to over 44,000 square meters by the end of 2025.

Bosch To Invest 3 Billion To Increase Semiconductor Supply

The EU and German government will part-fund the expansion of the semiconductor manufacturing which the bloc has identified as an area of strategic importance.

The Bosch Reutlingen semiconductor plant

Germanys Robert Bosch, one of the worlds most important automotive suppliers, will invest 3 billion through 2026 to expand its production of semiconductor chips, the company has announced. The move reinforces European production of a component whose recent scarcity has thrown automotive production into disarray.

The latest investment by the tier one supplier will be made as part of the EUs Important Projects of Common European Interest funding programme for microelectronics and communications technology. Its status as an IPCEI allows for provision of state aid within EU rules, with semiconductors now specifically identified as eligible.

Carmakers in Europe are currently looking for closer partnerships with semiconductor providers to avoid any future disruptions to supply given the losses incurred over the last 18 months. Management consultant AlixPartners published data earlier this year which showed the shortfall in vehicle production because of the semiconductor shortage in 2021 was equal to 8.2m units. In response the ramp-up of in-house production capacity has grown in popularity, supported plans by the European Commissions to at least double current production in Europe.

How To Invest In Bosch

Recently saw this post on investing in automated vehicles.

Based on this, it appears that Bosch may be the purest way to play the technology. However, upon researching, it appears that this may be a difficult play for the average investor as it only trades on the BSE .

How would a typical US investor with a Schwab account make a play on this?

How many years away are automated vehicles? How many companies are doing research on it?

It’s silly to buy Bosch or any company just because they have an edge on automated vehicles.

The fact is that Bosch makes its money now as an auto parts supplier with many competitors and will continue to make its money ten years from now as an auto parts supplier with many competitors.

Everyone is going to get a piece of the automated car market when it happens, and it ain’t happening soon.

Do you have any actual knowledge of a driverless car? Any industrial knowledge? Technical? Commercial? Legal? Production? Anything?

Any guesses into modelling revenue? R& D? Other expenses? Any idea how traditional auto manufactures will respond? What about potential insurance hurdles?

Or did you read a few articles on the internet and think it’s a real neat idea?

Looking at the dotcom bust, or the the early days of commercial aviation, most early investors ended up losing.

Bosch To Invest 3 Billion Euros In Chip Production

Thomson Reuters 2022Reuters

BERLIN -Technology group Bosch will invest 3 billion euros in chip production by 2026, including in opening two new development centres and expanding its wafer factory in Dresden, the company said on Wednesday.

The investment, for which Bosch will seek European Union funding under the Important Projects of Common European Interests framework, should boost Europes production capacity for chips in a global market still dominated by U.S. and Asian players.

Europe can and must capitalize on its own strengths in the semiconductor industry, said Chief Executive Stefan Hartung. The goal must be to produce chips for the specific needs of European industry.

Bosch last year opened a 1 billion euro chip factory in Dresden, a record investment as it sought to stake its claim in the growing market for chips to equip self-driving and electric cars amid a global shortage.

A total of 170 million euros will go into the new development centres in Reutlingen and Dresden, with 250 million euros to be spent on expanding the existing Dresden site.

How the remaining funds will be spent is yet to be decided, Hartung said.

The CEO expects bottlenecks in chip supply, from strained shipping networks to low production capacity, to continue for several more months, even as inflation eases pressure on some parts of the sector by reducing demand for expensive consumer goods.

What Should I Look For In A Dishwasher

There are a few major factors that can help steer you in the right direction of finding the best dishwashers for you. Noise is always important because a loud dishwasher can easily interrupt those family dinners or bedtime.

Capacity is also important so that you are not stuck running load after load. Price is a determining factor for most people when it comes to searching for today’s best dishwasher, so look for affordably priced models or those on sale.

Promoting Microelectronics To Increase Europes Competitiveness

Within the framework of the European Chips Act, the European Union and German federal government are providing additional funding to develop a robust ecosystem for the European microelectronics industry. The objective is to double Europes slice of global semiconductor production from 10 to 20 percent by the end of the decade. The newly launched IPCEI on Microelectronics and Communication Technology is intended primarily to promote research and innovation. Europe can and must capitalize on its own strengths in the semiconductor industry, Hartung said. More than ever, the goal must be to produce chips for the specific needs of European industry. And that means not only chips at the bottom end of the nanoscale. Electronic components used in the electromobility industry, for example, require process sizes of between 40 and 200 nanometers. This is exactly what the Bosch wafer fabs are designed for.

Big Demand For Silicon Carbide Chips From Reutlingen

A further focal point at Bosch is the production of new types of semiconductors. At its Reutlingen plant, for example, Bosch has been mass-producing silicon carbide chips since the end of 2021. These are used in the power electronics required for electric and hybrid vehicles, where they have already helped boost operating ranges by up to 6 percent. On the back of powerful market growth, at annual rates of 30 percent or more, demand for SiC chips remains high, meaning full order books for Bosch. In a bid to make these power electronics more affordable and more efficient, Bosch is exploring the use of other types of chips as well. Were also looking into the development of chips based on gallium nitride for electromobility applications, Hartung said. These chips are already found in laptop and smartphone chargers. Before they can be used in vehicles, they will have to become more robust and able to withstand substantially higher voltages of up to 1,200 volts. Challenges like these are all part of the job for Bosch engineers. Our strength is that weve been familiar with microelectronics for a long time and we know our way around cars just as well.

BERLIN, July 13 – Technology group Bosch expects supply bottlenecks for some types of chips to last into 2023 even as inflation reduces demand for certain consumer goods, the company said on Wednesday as it announced a 3 billion euro investment in chip production.

“A lot will ease up in 2022, but there will still be bottlenecks in 2023. Individual industries may need fewer chips if demand falls due to a possible downturn…but you can’t build a strategy on that,” chief executive Stefan Hartung said in an interview.

Bosch announced earlier on Wednesday it would invest 3 billion euros in chip production by 2026, the latest in a string of firms capitalising on European support for the industry to reduce dependence on suppliers abroad. read more

Significant Expansion Of 300

This new investment in microelectronics also opens up new areas of innovation for Bosch. Being a leader in innovation begins with the very smallest of electronic components: semiconductor chips, Hartung said. New fields of innovation at Bosch include systems-on-a-chip, such as the radar sensors a vehicle uses to perform 360 degree scans of its surroundings during automated driving. Bosch will now be looking to enhance such components, making them smaller, smarter, and also cheaper to produce. The company is also working to further modify its own microelectromechanical systems specifically for the consumer goods industry. One of the things company researchers are currently using this technology to develop is a new projection module that is so tiny it can be built into the temple of a pair of smartglasses. In order to cement our leading market position in MEMS technology, we also plan to manufacture our MEMS sensors on 300-millimeter wafers, Hartung said. Production is scheduled to start in 2026. Our new wafer fab gives us the opportunity to scale production an advantage we intend to exploit to the full.
