Ee Bond Gets Higher Fixed Rate

The Best Ways to Invest in Your 20s | Phil Town

Here is the Treasurys announcement:

Series EE bonds issued from November 2022 through April 2023 earn todays announced rate of 2.10%. All Series EE bonds issued since May 2005 earn a fixed rate in the first 20 years after issue. At 20 years, the bonds will be worth at least two times their purchase price. The bonds will continue to earn interest at their original fixed rate for an additional 10 years unless new terms and conditions are announced before the final 10-year period begins.

And here is my translation:

  • The EE Bonds fixed rate soars from a paltry 0.1% to a more competitive 2.1%. This is a huge upgrade for EE Bond investors, but keep in mind
  • An EE Bond held for 20 years immediately doubles in value, creating an investment with a compounded return of 3.53%, tax-deferred. So, if you invest $10,000 at age 40, you can collect $20,000 at age 60, with $10,000 of that total becoming taxable.
  • After the doubling in value at 20 years, the EE Bond will revert to earning 2.1 % for another 10 years.

This change to the fixed rate is a big deal because under the old fixed rate of 0.1%, it made no sense to invest in an EE Bonds unless you could absolutely hold it for 20 years. Now it makes sense to hold for 20 years, but it isnt an absolute necessity.

But even with the higher fixed rate, EE Bonds in November 2022 arent particularly attractive, since you can get 4.66% right now on a 1-year Treasury bill, or 4.44% on a 20-year bond.

Considering Crypto Be Cautious

Until very recently, cryptocurrency was the hot new investment that everyone wanted a piece of. But if youve been following the news, you probably already know that crypto has seen something of a fall from gracethanks in part to massive market volatility.

Even before recent market events, however, crypto had been seeing spectacular gains and stomach-churning losses. Given the uncertainty and high amount of risk involved in crypto, it would probably be best to look somewhere else besides cryptocurrency for places to invest $10,000.

However, if youre dead set on investing in Bitcoin or Ethereum, make sure its money you can afford to lose. In addition, consider making crypto only a very small part of your overall portfolio, no more than 5%. For more crypto investment ideas, check out our list of the top cryptocurrencies.

What Types Of Bonds Are There

Bonds also known as fixed income instruments are used by governments or companies to raise money by borrowing from investors. Bonds are typically issued to raise funds for specific projects. In return, the bond issuer promises to pay back the investment, with interest, over a certain period of time.

Certain types of bonds corporate and government bonds are rated by credit agencies to help determine the quality of those bonds. These ratings are used to help assess the likelihood that investors will be repaid. Typically, bond ratings are grouped into two major categories: investment grade and high yield .

The three major types of bonds are corporate, municipal, and Treasury bonds:

  • Treasury bonds are issued by the U.S. government. Since theyre backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, treasury bonds are considered risk-free. But treasury bonds dont yield interest rates as high as corporate bonds. While treasury bonds are subject to federal tax, theyre exempt from state and local taxes.

The I Fund The International Stock Index Investment Fund

Pros: Allows for international equities to be purchased

Cons: Only invested in developed countries, so lacks exposure to entire international market and emerging markets

This fund mimics the MSCI EAFE Index, a collection of over 900 large and medium sized corporations. Most of these companies are in Western Europe and Japan.

Keep in mind, this fund is concentrated primarily in Japan, Germany, Switzerland, France, and the UK. Japan makes up more than 25% of the portfolio. It is not the same as some international funds out there that have a sampling of small companies from countries all over the world.

This is actually an important consideration when equating this I fund with some of the TSP investment strategies I have listed later in this post.

When strategies call for an international index fund, they probably mean one with exposure to emerging countries and smaller companies as well as the ones listed in the MSCI EAFE. There are different flavors of international index funds, and this I fund doesnt quite capture the most diverse of them.

Keep that in mind when using the I fund as a substitute for international index funds in a prescribed strategy.

    How Much You Can Invest

How much can you bring to an investment? The more money you can invest, the more likely its going to be worthwhile to investigate higher-risk, higher-return investments.

If you can bring more money, it can be worthwhile to make the time investment required to understand a specific stock or industry, because the potential rewards are so much greater than with bank products such as CDs.

Otherwise, it may not simply be worth your time. So, you may stick with bank products or turn to ETFs or mutual funds that require less time investment. These products can also work well for those who want to add to the account incrementally, as 401 participants do.

Where To Invest Money In The New Year

How To Invest $1,000 In Your 20s | Beginners Guide

Its hard to know what the markets will do in 2023. A diversified investment portfolio will always protect you against risk and ensure some kind of growth over the long term. Make sure youre not putting all of your investment funds into a single stock or even into a single sector, such as real estate or treasury bonds. Put together a mix of different investments so you wont lose everything if one of those investments begins to disappoint you.

Target-date funds are a great idea because they spread your investment dollars out among different stocks, bonds, and other assets, depending on when you plan to use the money youre investing. This can be helpful when youre investing for retirement, planning for college, or saving for something else. Set a date, schedule automatic investments, and leave your money alone.

Consider treasury bonds as well. While these investments arent always as exciting as high-yield stocks and funds, theyre certainly having their moment thanks to higher interest rates. You can expect to earn from six percent up to nine percent if you invest in the right bond at the right time. Earn more by holding the bonds for longer.

    Anything Else I Should Know

Yesâconsider the potential for deflation for TIPS with short-term maturities.

TIPS mature at the greater of the adjusted principal or the initial value at issuance. Investors who buy new-issue TIPS are therefore protected against deflation, but that’s not the case when buying TIPS in the secondary market. If you buy a TIPS that already has been adjusted higher, and then the CPI begins to decline, you could actually lose money.

That might seem unlikely given that inflation continues to run relatively hot, but the “headline” CPI index that TIPS are referenced to includes volatile food and energy prices. If energy prices resume their downward trend, monthly CPI readings potentially could begin to fall.

    Cons Of Investing In Bonds

  • Less cash: Bonds require you to lock your money away for extended periods of time.
  • Interest rate risk: Because bonds are a relatively long-term investment, you’ll face the risk of interest rate changes. For example, if you buy a 10-year bond paying 3% interest, and, a month later, that same issuer offers bonds at 4% interest, then your bond drops in value. If you hold it, you’ll lose out on potential earnings by getting stuck with that lower rate.
  • Issuer default: This is uncommon, but if an issuer defaults on its obligations, you risk losing out on interest payments, getting your principal repaid, or both.
  • Transparency: There’s less transparency in the bond market than in the stock market, so brokers can sometimes get away with charging higher prices. You might have a harder time determining whether the price you’re quoted for a given bond is fair.
  • Smaller returns: The return on investment you’ll get from bonds is substantially lower than what you’ll get with stocks.

4 Assets That Make people Rich

Corporate bonds are similar to treasuries. But instead of lending to the government, as is the case with treasury bonds, corporate bonds involve loaning monies to corporations and other business entities. We feature them among the best $2K investments of the year because they offer higher returns than comparable investments such as government bonds or bank certificates of deposits while giving you a near-similar level of guarantees.

Corporate bonds also make it here because they are a low-risk passive investment that appeals most to risk-averse and first-time investors. You do not need prior inviting or trading experience to start bidding on corporate bonds or buying them at an over-the-counter bond market.

They also make it here because they offer fixed interest rates. Plus, they are moderately liquid as they can be either sold at a third-party exchange or used to secure loans with banks. We might also add that they are way less volatile than stocks or crypto.

    Tax Treatment Of Tips

Fox says that TIPS do provide investors with certain tax benefits as principal increases and interest payments are exempt from state and local taxes.

According to Blumstein, new investors should consider the tax ramifications of TIPS where the principal increase is taxed though no actual income is produced. He says investors should also analyze the TIPS breakeven for the respective maturity.

“If inflation is higher than the TIPS breakeven, the investor will be better off owning TIPS versus Treasuries,” he explains. But if it’s below, investors may be better off owning regular Treasuries.

There Is No Magic Investing Bullet

Too often, investors keep hopping from one concept to the next, usually never making money in any of them. If the “robot that picks stocks ” didn’t work, maybe they switch to trading options. That doesn’t work, so they try binary options . . . derivatives . . . foreign exchange . . . commodities . . . the list will be endless.

Remove Emotions As Best You Can

Investing in the stock market can be a roller coaster due to market volatility, and if your emotions are not prepared, you can make some rash decisions.

This goes for both in bull and bear markets.

Letting emotions drive your decisions can lead to losing money, selling, and buying too often and can impact your long-term results.

There is a lot that could be said about emotional investing, but I recommend reading this Investopedia article if you are interested in the topic further.

    What To Do Now

The Best Way to Invest Your Money

Consider TIPS if you’re looking for long-term inflation protection. With real yields well above zero, investors can finally earn higher income with TIPS while also helping protect against inflation over the long run.

We don’t believe TIPS yields should rise much further, so we believe the worst of the price declines is likely behind us. However, Treasury market volatility has been elevated this year, and we expect it to continue as the Fed tightens financial conditions. Additional price declines are therefore still possible, reiterating our view that TIPS shouldn’t be considered short-term hedges against inflationâbut they can help over the long run.

For individual TIPS holders, any potential price declines might not matter if they’re held to maturity. For those who invest in TIPS through ETFs or mutual funds, that could mean modest declines from here, but that doesn’t mean you need to abandon your holdings. If yields rise and the funds rebalance, investors may be rewarded with higher income payments to help offset some of the potential price declines, while additional increases would result in positive principal adjustments to the underlying holdings.

    Are Bonds A Good Investment

Bonds may serve as a great addition to any investment portfolio. However, expectations for returns should be tempered. According to Maurie Backman at The Motley Fool, stocks averaged an 11.3% return, while bonds averaged just 5.28% between 1928 and 2010. While its not fair to expect bonds to realize as high of returns as stocks, the security they award investors is invaluable. Its their relative safety which makes learning how to invest in bonds a great idea for new investors.

While bonds alone can provide their holders with predictable income over decades, their true brilliance shines when they are added to a diversified portfolio. Their inverse correlation with the stocks market means bonds tend to increase in value when stocks drop, and vice-versa. As a result, bonds are the perfect hedge against volatility.

The Best Stocks For High Inflation

Equities arent a reliable inflation hedge in the short run, but they tend to be more resilient longer term. Many companies have the power to raise prices to pass along the burden of higher supply chain costs to their consumers. Other companies arent dependent on the cost of raw materials to maintain their profit margins. But not all companies have that kind of pricing power. Overall, inflation wont have a uniform impact on the stock market, so its important to seek out high-quality companies that can weather the storm.

Investing Early Gives You An Advantage

    How to invest in yourself

Compounding is another reason to leave your investments alone. Compounding interest occurs when you start earning money on the money your investments have already earned. Its essentially a snowball effect.

Investing earlier in life gives you a compounding advantage. You are increasing your earnings just by staying invested in the market longer.

Financial expert Suze Orman, among others, strongly supports the idea of investing sooner rather than later.

I would much rather see you invest a specific amount of money when you are young, a lesser amount of money, than waiting and have to invest five or six times when you are older, Orman told CNBC in 2019.

Time is a safeguard against risk. The younger you are, the more time you have to recoup losses. Taking financial risks when youre young can pay off big. And if it doesnt, you still have years to rebuild the money you lost.

As you approach retirement, however, you should take fewer risks because it could jeopardize your nest egg.

Consider the financial principle known as the 120 Rule.

The concept is simple. Subtract your age from 120. The resulting number is the percentage of your money you should place in stocks. The rest goes into bonds.

For example, a 30-year-old would invest 90 percent in stocks and 10 percent in bonds. A 50-year-old, on the other hand, should have 70 percent in stocks and 30 percent in bonds.

    Tips Often Underperform Traditional Treasuries

In many ways, TIPS are similar to other government securities sold by the U.S. Treasury. As with Treasury bonds, they are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States government and pay annual interest. The crucial difference is the face value of a TIPS bond is adjusted according to the official consumer price index . The higher the CPI, the higher the face value for the TIPS.

On the surface, this seems like a great deal. After all, inflation eats away at nominal interest payments. With TIPS, an upward adjustment of face value also means that interest payments go up with inflation. TIPS are therefore perceived as safer, which lowers their expected returns because of the risk-return tradeoff. However, TIPS aren’t the only securities that price in inflation. Standard Treasury bonds also have an implicit inflation adjustment.
